UNDATED (CBS) – There is a new concern for kids after several are sent to the hospital because of their fidget spinners.

Millions of the hot new toy have been sold across the country, but now the Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating incidents involving fidget spinners, saying several kids have choked on them.

Doctors say kids have needed surgery after swallowing metal pieces that fall off or can be pulled off the spinners. They say parents should keep a close eye on their kids when playing with the toy.

“So I think just not to give these to younger children, children under six, and for older children to really explain that these are toys but they also have risks, they should not be put in their mouths, they should not be taken apart. I think parents need to educate their children about the danger of these,” says Dr. Nina Shapiro with UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital.

Doctors say there are now smaller fidget spinners on the market that are also considered dangerous for kids.
