ROCKFORD,Ill. (WIFR) - Business is booming in Rockford’s Midtown District.
"It's a great place to work, live and play,” said Vice President of Guler Appliance Company, Andy Guler.
"It’s the perfect time to have something that offers some physical attributes," said Owner of Midtown Fitness, Keith Young.
"It’s bringing a lot of people to the area that hasn’t been here for a while,” said Owner of Mannie’s Barbershop, Manisee Young.
As you drive down Seventh Street you'll find long-time businesses like Guler Appliance Company.
"This is our 83rd year of business here in this exact location in the Midtown District,” Guler said.
And others like Midtown Fitness which opened a few months ago.
"Here I am following my passion and opening up a gym actually in an area I grew up in,” Young said.
But no matter how long they've been around, the businesses have one thing in common.
"They're all locally owned, privately owned businesses and that's a good feeling to see people investing in the community,” said Executive Director of the Midtown District Association, Ronn Mooney.
Since March, eight new businesses set up shop.
"It's gone from me and the corner store to a couple of businesses coming together and making the neighborhood come to life," Rollins said.
Several shop owners credit the city of Rockford for the work it’s done to maintain the neighborhood.
"It’s a beautiful historic area with tree-line streets, cobblestone sidewalks and you know, it's very clean,” Young said.
And they hope it lures many community members to the heart of Rockford.
"So if you've explored some of the other neighborhoods in the area it's time to start coming down to the Midtown District. It's open for business," Guler said.
Four other businesses could open this spring in the midtown area.
