Budget deficit could lead to Rockford Park District closures, suspensions

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockford Park District faces some big budget decisions heading into 2020 that could lead to closing and suspending several facilities.

Jay Sandine, Rockford Park District Executive Director, recommended the closure of Sinnissippi Golf Course, a suspension of Snow Park at Alpine Hills and a potential suspension of the Alpine Pool next summer.

Sandine made the recommendations at Tuesday's board meeting.

The proposed changes come as the Rockford Park District expects to enter 2020 with a $1.2 million deficit. The park district has started each of the last five years with a deficit of at least $1 million.

Sandine says the recommendations come after a period of "historic engagement," which included input from phone calls, sessions and social media inquires.

Rockford Park District leaders say there will be more discussions on the future of the budget and facilities. Votes are not expected until November.
