ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- An 11-year-old boy battling Batten's disease, a rare illness affecting his nervous system, helped out with a special responsibility Tuesday at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford.

Brock Scarpetta was nominated to light the hospital's Christmas tree this season.

The SwedishAmerican staff says they nominated Scarpetta for his upbeat attitude, his optimism and his perpetual smile.

Scarpetta's parents, Brad and Christina, recently learned their son's treatment will be fully-funded. A pharmaceutical company will help Scarpetta as he battles his disease.
