ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – A local lawmaker is trying to remove the roadblocks so victims of domestic violence can get away.

Illinois Senator Steve Stadelman says a phone could be an anchor keeping a victim close to their abuser which is why the Senator is supporting legislation that would help keep victims separate from cell phone plans controlled by the abuser while still allowing them to keep their same phone and number.

“Cell phones have become an essential tool in our everyday lives. They contain important information, personal information, phone numbers, addresses and even personal banking information. Having to purchase a new phone number and new information just creates an unnecessary hurdle for that person to leave an abusive relationship,” says Sen. Stadelman (D) 34th District.

The bill passed unanimously in committee and will now move on to the Illinois Senate for a vote.
