BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) -- A Belvidere man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after he admitted to shooting at drivers at an Iowa truck stop in January 2018.
Authorities in Cedar County, Iowa say Charles Johnston, 61, was targeting truck drivers for retaliation after some of his family members were killed in a collision with a semi-truck.
When an Iowa State Trooper arrived at the scene on I-80, Johnston opened fire on the trooper, but only hit his patrol car.
Prosecutors dropped charges of operating while intoxicated and attempted murder in return for pleading guilty. Johnston was also charged with assault of a peace officer.
