BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) -- Many people decorate for the holidays, but Wayne Butz of Belvidere goes all out each year.
Butz has built quite the collection of Christmas decorations. His expensive cache includes more than 1,000 ornaments, all which he collected over the past 70 years while growing up in Belvidere.
"We moved here in 1948 on Thanksgiving Day and I've been here ever since, they can't get rid of me," Butz said.
Each year, Butz decorates his house for Christmas, painstakingly putting thousands of ornaments on 15 christmas trees. But there's a different story behind each tree.
"I have a patriotic one, an antique ornament tree, a Santa Claus tree, food tree, fruits and vegetables tree, angel tree, a tinsel tree on the back porch, upstairs there is one with pine cones," Butz
Wayne's home is full of family gems and antiques. But he considers his ornaments his prized possessions.
"Some people hunt and fish and get their enjoyment out ot that," Butz said. "I don't care if anybody comes or not. If nobody comes, I don't care because I still enjoy putting them up and seeing them."
"It's an old house and I think the trees look nice in an old house."
The extra holiday lighting can add to the monthly electric bill. However, the higher energy costs aren't a deterrent.
"I have this addiction for ornaments and I keep buying ornaments. So it's another tree and then another tree."
Butz hopes to keep decorating his house and host open house for his holiday displays as long as he can.
