Beloit group holds meeting in opposition of casino project

BELOIT, Wis. (WIFR) -- The city of Beloit is seeing opposition to the Ho-Chunk Casino and resort development after a group of community members addressed concerns about the project.

The 11th Hour Beloit Casino Group addressed the timeline of the casino's development and suggested community members have a referendum to determine the amount of interest the community has in the project.

A Beloit city official attended the meeting to inform the group that the public comment period for this project is over and it is currently pending at the federal level.

"Again, there was a public process just last February on this subject and that was an openly held posted meeting, all the information was available a head of time and there was no one in attendance at that particular meeting in opposition. It's just that this stage of the game I think having discussions of an advisory referendum aren't necessarily appropriate given the timing of this project and where we are right now,” said Lori Curtis Luther, Beloit city manager.

The development still has to go through a two-step approval process. First getting approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs at the federal level, then it would move to the governor’s desk for his review at the state level.
