Baby critically injured, 18-year-old man arrested for battery
Rockford Police Patrol Officers responded to a local hospital for a 21-month-old baby boy who was not breathing on Saturday, December 21 just after 7 p.m.. The child had multiple life-threatening injuries, including bruises and burns and is in critical condition according to the Rockford Police.
Detectives investigated the incident that happened at a home in the 200 block of Guard Street. Police arrested 18 year old Trenton Higgins of Rockford and charged him with aggravated battery to a child. Higgins was in a domestic relationship with the child's mother.
“I’m sickened and disgusted by this tragedy,” says Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea. “It’s incomprehensible how anyone can commit acts like this against a child.”
Additional charges are possible as the investigation is ongoing. Higgins is held at the Winnebago County Jail on a $1 million bond.
