ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Auburn High School teacher and city alderperson Jonathan Logemann has been called to active duty overseas.

But before he leaves, students and staff at Auburn High School gave him a memorable sendoff. Logemann was surprised with a farewell assembly Friday afternoon.

Logemann will start working out of Chicago with his battalion next week. He ships out to Afghanistan this summer.

He says seeing his students show support means the world to him and makes his new journey worthwhile.

"These kids mean so much to me and its special to know that I at least mean a little something to them," Logemann said. "I think all of us teachers hope that we can service as role models... there are no words, it's special."
