ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR) -- As we celebrate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., US Cellular along with the Boys and Girls Club of Rockford is honoring influential African American leaders through its annual art contest.

It's all part of the third annual black history month art competition. Students will create drawings that recognize historical figures who have made a difference. Ten finalist will have their work on display at area US Cellular stores throughout February to celebrate black history month. The three winners will then receive prizes. Organizers say the goal of this contest is simple.

“Just to have fun you know, that's most important and really to be able to creatively express who important individuals are that they believe have contributed to something in their own personal life, and who they can connect to and feel is important to share,” said Jenny Justman with US Cellular.
