American Red Cross helps install smoke detectors in the Rockford area

ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR)--- As part of the American Red Cross national campaign, Sound the Alarm - Save a Life, community members went door to door helping their neighbors install smoke alarms.

According to the Red Cross, seven people die in house fires every day. This initiative is working to bridge that gap and through it the Red Cross has been able to install over one million smoke detectors.

Scott Otto who has been a volunteer with the Red Cross for 14 years says it's important to teach the community about fire prevention and safety.

"I've been to fires where the entire family was lost, and could have been possibly because there's no smoke detector," says Otto.

Sound the Alarm was also part of Governor-Elect J.B. Pritzker's Day of Service.

"This is just a great day for people to volunteer and do things for their neighbors across the state," says Governor-Elect Pritzker.
