SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Brian Stewart was sworn in Wednesday as state senator for the 45th District of Illinois.
The 45th District represents parts of Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties.
Stewart takes over the position after previously working as a state representative for the 89th District. He worked with the Illinois House of Representatives for more than five years.
Prior to Election Day, Stewart told 23 News he wants to continue building the economy in Freeport and working with the local businesses.
"Years of questionable policy decisions and budgeting practices have left their mark on our state,” Stewart said. “We have our work cut out for us, and the decisions will be tough. It will be better for all of us if we decide now to work together rather than getting bogged down in partisan bickering.”
Stewart says his immediate priorities are bipartisan pension reform, balanced budgets, and common-sense economic growth initiatives.
