Local mailman becomes unexpected hero
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Everyone is okay after a car crashes into a McDonald’s on Kishwaukee Street. Now a mom and baby have an unexpected hero to thank for helping them right after the accident.
What started as US postal worker Vick Brown's normal lunch break ended in an act of heroism.
Brown says as he was walking into the McDonald’s on Kishwaukee Street Monday afternoon, he heard a woman yelling at another driver for almost hitting her.
Brown says he banged on the driver's window to get her attention, and noticed she wasn't responding and saw that there was a child in the back seat.
He then jumped inside the car and put it in park before it could do any more damage. Brown then took child out of the back seat.
“It's just a natural instinct,” remarks Brown, “You see someone in trouble, and you wanna do the right thing, you know? And I just sprung into action. I never really thought about what I was doing; it just felt natural."
Brown says a lot of people nearby were recording what happened on their phones instead of helping. He hopes his story will encourage more people to take action when someone else is in danger.
Rockford Police and Fire Department were called the scene and the woman was taken to a local hospital. No one else was hurt.
