Born and raised in Rockford, Shannon Kelly grew up watching 23 News, and is thrilled to report the news in her hometown. She started in May 2017 as a multimedia journalist at WIFR and moved to weeknight anchor in October 2018.

"I love meeting new people every single day. Each day is different. I could never, ever sit at a desk from 9 to 5. I love being able to take a topic that people care about and produce a story that other people can relate to."

Shannon graduated from Boylan High School and Michigan State University, where she got involved with a student-run sports broadcast group and changed her major from marketing to journalism.

She says her “Nana” is the most important person in her life. “She is my everything. Since I was little, we have been best friends. She’s the person I go to for advice, for a shoulder to lean on or just to have a conversation. She is the sassiest, most fabulous little lady you’ll ever meet. I admire her persistence, her courage and strength, and her faith. We share a pretty special bond, and I can’t think of anyone I love more than her.”

But she credits her mom and dad for being the biggest influences on her life. She said they instilled in her and her sister the mantra to work hard and never give up. “Kellys never quit” and “Work before play.”

When she’s not at work, you’ll find Shannon hanging out with family and friends, shopping, doing yoga or trying new restaurants.

SURPRISING FACT: I took improv classes at Second City in Chicago when I was 10 years old. (That’s why I’m so hilarious.)

FAVORITE DRINK: If I could only drink chai tea lattes for the rest of my life, I would.

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE: It’s not fair to choose one entree, so I’ll list a few: pizza, chicken & dumplings, pad thai, beef stroganoff, Chipotle burrito bowls and Chick-fil-A’s spicy chicken sandwich.

FAVORITE DESSERT: I have the biggest sweet tooth and love all desserts, but ice cream is also a safe choice, specifically cookie dough. I also love red velvet cake, but cupcakes are better. Apple pie has made me who I am, and I can’t live without brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

FAVORITE HOLIDAY: Christmas. Growing up my mom went all out with Christmas decorations, and we always have a huge Christmas Eve party with friends and family, so it’s always fun looking forward to that. It’s a time when my whole family comes together and spends time with one another.

FAVORITE SEASON: Fall. My birthday is in the fall, the weather is the best and it’s the only time we can get Edward’s doughnuts, need I say more?

FAVORITE MOVIES: “Remember the Titans," "Miracle" and, more recently, "A Star is Born" because Lady Gaga is amazing. Also, can we pick a show? Because "Game of Thrones" is the greatest thing that’s happened to television, in my opinion.

MOST DARING FEAT: I went skydiving while studying abroad in Queensland, Australia.
