Illinois State Trooper hit by DUI driver while assisting with unrelated DUI investigation

CHICAGO, Ill. (WIFR) - Illinois State Police officials are investigating a traffic crash involving a DUI driver and an Illinois State Trooper on Friday.

Just before midnight on Dec. 17, a trooper assisting in a DUI investigation was hit on I-94 northbound at Garfield Blv. in Cook County. The fully marked squad car was parked on the right shoulder with active emergency lights at the time of the crash.

Scott’s Law, known as the “Move Over” law, states that drivers are required to slow down and move over when approaching any vehicle with their emergency or hazard lights activated.

Alontae L. Holliday, a 25-year-old female of Matteson, Ill., did not slow down or switch lanes when approaching the parked squad cars and veered off the roadway onto the right shoulder. Her vehicle lost control, sideswiping the front driver’s side of one of the squad cars. Holliday .was charged with a violation of Scott’s Law, DUI, no insurance, driving too fast for conditions and improper lane usage.

No injuries have been reported.

A person who violates Scott’s Law faces fines up to $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator faces up to two year suspension of their driver’s license.

In 2021, Illinois State police have seen 22 squad cars struck in relation to Scott’s Law and 13 Troopers have sustained injuries from Scott’s Law-related crashes.
