WINNEBAGO, Ill. (WIFR) - Championships line the trophy case at Winnebago high school from various teams. Cross country, boys track, and more have brought home hardware, but for the first time, a girls track plaque could make an appearance.

“Anytime you get a chance to win a state title that’s a special thing,” Winnebago track & field head coach Joe Erb said. “Our girl’s programs never brought home a state trophy and that would be a top goal for us is to be one of the top three.”

At the Class 2A sectional meet, it was all Winnebago all day. The Indians won by nearly 80 points Erb hopes to carry some of that momentum downstate.

“It was a great performance it’s kind of one that we would work towards and plan for,” Erb said. “They’ve held themselves accountable so as great as it was it was kind of what they expected.”

Expectations are high especially on the feet of Natalia Martino. She dominated the 1600 meter run this season, posting the top time in the state and winning sectionals with ease.

“There is a lot of good competition in the race,” Martino said. “Nothing has been done yet it’d be amazing if I was able to do it.”

“There’s a lot of girls that are going to be fighting for this state title in the 1600,” Erb said.

Erb says winning a state title is a special accomplishment. This group missed out on state competition in cross country season. Erb says bringing one home in track would feel like a family victory.

“I have two daughters on the team and they’ve got their friends on the team,” Erb said. “To get to coach your kids and their friends that you’re close with, it’s just real special.”
