ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Summer school enrollment at Rockford Public Schools has gained popularity post quarantine with as many as 5,000 students ready to take advantage of free K-12 programs and retreats for the summer.

“The programs are to help students if they need to catch up, and some are just enrichment,” said Travis Woulfe, RPS Executive Director of Improvement Innovation. “We do experiential learning activities that help students connect what they’re learning in the classroom to real-world experiences.”

School administrators say some students loved school from their living rooms during COVID-19, while others missed the everyday classroom interactions. RPS leaders say many students seem eager to attend their first in-person classes since the start of the pandemic.

“We’ve had a lot of calls,” Woulfe said. “We have a great team in my department, answering parents questions and trying to walk them through various options.”

Over in Boone County, Cari Moreno is excited for her 6-year-old son, Jackson to rejoin his friends and practice more skills at District 100 summer school.

“The biggest thing is getting him in person again and getting him around the kids, and our biggest goal is with reading because it was hard to learn reading through online,” Moreno said.

Moreno says Jackson will focus on reading in the first session and then transition into the scientific session, which Jackson can’t wait to join.

“He asks Alexa every morning what the weather is going to be, so I figured that would be a good one to get him enrolled in,” Moreno said.

Jackson has some pretty lofty goals of his own.

“When I grow up, I want to be a paleontologist,” Jackson said.

The RPS Summer School starts on June 21. Programs and retreats are free, and transportation and supplies are provided. For more details, visit their website.
