ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Rock House Kids, an environment for inner-city kids ages 6 through 18, is the recipient of a $5,000 grant as part of the 5th Annual Caring for the Community Grant Program through the SwedishAmerican Foundation.

“We are so grateful to our neighbors of the SwedishAmerican Foundation for coming alongside us to help fund field trips for the kids. It couldn’t have come at a better time! Now that many COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted, we can finally take the kids out of the neighborhood for some enrichment and fun. With the majority of our kids enrolled in e-learning all year from home, it has taken a toll on them. Providing field trips for our Rock House Kids gives them opportunities most of them do not have access to otherwise. It is crucial for our inner-city children to see and experience life outside of the crime-ridden neighborhood in which they live. These outings are so important for social and emotional development. They need healthy outlets to release their stress and learn important teambuilding skills,” Rock House Kids Executive Director, Deanna “Dee” Lacny said.

Rock House Kids currently impact the lives of more than 250 impoverished youth with their free programming that is open to the public four nights a week. They provide mentoring, hot meals, take-home food bags and provide needed essentials throughout the year.

“SwedishAmerican’s mission is, ‘Through excellence in healthcare and compassionate service, we care for our community. We are thrilled to have the opportunity again this year to care for our community beyond the walls of our health system by investing in not-for-profit organizations who share in our mission in caring for youth and families in the Rockford area.”

In 1981, 70 years after that first donation, SwedishAmerican established the SwedishAmerican Foundation to continue the health system’s philanthropy.

The nonprofit receives no federal, state, or city funding, but are wholly supported by donations from corporations, churches and individuals in the Rockford area. For more information about the Rock House Kids programs, visit their website here.
