ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - A 28-year-old man was found guilty of aggravated and domestic battery from a March 19 case in Rockford.

On March 19, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department was sent to 4301 Pinecrest Rd. for a domestic battery. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the victim. She said she received phone calls from her ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old Leroy Sams, around 2:30 a.m., but she did not answer them, according to the Winnebago Co. State’s Attorney’s Office.

The victim explained that Sams told her he was near her home. At that time, she started hearing someone tapping on her bedroom window.

She said she did not want Sams there and a verbal argument started. The victim grabbed her iPhone and ran outside to record Sams. Sams saw her recording, grabbed her iPhone and took it. Sams then threw her onto the street.

The victim said she saw Sams drop his phone, so she went to take it. She stated that Sams grabbed a handgun from his vehicle, “cocked it”, and pointed it at her while stating, “Get away from it and go inside.” She stated she was scared for her life so she went back inside her residence.

“We could not have gotten this result without the compliance and bravery of the victim in this case,” Assistant State’s Attorney Alexeus Bender said.

The case is set for a sentencing hearing on July 26 at 10 a.m. in Courtroom 467 of the Winnebago County Courthouse.
