Regents softball clinches first trip to NACC tournament
LOVES PARK, Ill. (WIFR) - Despite losing both games of the double-header on Friday against Dominican, Rockford University softball clinched its first ever spot in the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference tournament.
Coming into the weekend, the Regents had plenty of options to make the tournament. The simplest would have been to win one of the next four match-ups against the Stars. That did not happen on Friday. The other was for Aurora University to sweep Concordia College. That did happen on Friday.
“It’s the first time in school history that we’ve been in the conference tournament,” said Regents head coach Josh Keener. “It was a goal of ours when we took over the program in 2018. That was the number one thing that we’re working towards, and for this group to be able to do that, is awesome.”
It has been quite the turnaround for the Regents since Keener took over a 5-win team in 2018. Rockford won 16 games in 2019, and was 6-2 in 2020 before the pandemic shut down the season. This year, the Regents are 19-15 overall and 9-9 in conference.
RU will play in the NACC South tournament on Thursday at either Aurora or Benedictine, depending on what happens in Saturday’s conference finales. The Regents need to win one of their final two games against Dominican to clinch the three-seed.
