ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Rockford’s twelfth ward is home to one of the most competitive city council races; as Democrat Gina Meeks faces off with Republican Bobby Walsh for the late John Beck’s seat.

Beck served on the City Council for nearly two decades but passed away last year. Ginger Hanley is currently serving the rest of Beck’s term, but decided to not run for the seat.

Gina Meeks is looking to bring transparency to the seat if she wins. “I wanna bring - number one - communication. I really want to have a good relationship with all the residents of this ward, I really want to bring unity to this ward. We have so many neighborhood organizations in this ward and I really want to bring them together.”

Bobby Walsh also wants to bring greater transparency to the race, but also wants to focus on the crime problem facing the city. “Whether it’s me talking to Edgewater neighborhood association, North End Square neighborhood association, crime and gun violence and neighborhood safety are on the forefront of everyone’s mind.”

Both candidates hope to win the support of voters for Tuesday’s election.
