DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) - Both the Northern Illinois men’s and women’s basketball teams ended the 2020 calendar year with a loss. Saturday, both teams were in action at the Convocation Center, hoping to start 2021 on a high note with a home win.

The women got the double-header started on the right note. The Huskies defeated Western Michigan 73-56 behind Chelby Koker’s game-high 21. It’s the fifth time the sophomore has scored 20+ in a game. Northern Illinois (3-5, 1-2) took the lead back in the final seconds of the first off a Jayden Marable (14 points) layup and never looked back. The Huskies snapped their four-game losing streak with the win.

The men have had a hard time finding consistent scoring since the departing of Eugene German to graduation last year. Northern Illinois (1-7, 0-3) had its lowest scoring output of the season in a 68-42 loss to Bowling Green. The Huskies were only down five at the half, but the Falcons heated up to start the second half, outscoring NIU for the entire game (45 points) in the final 20 minutes.

NIU was led in scoring by Darius Beane with 13. Tyler Cochran scored 11 before leaving the game in the second half with a hamstring injury. The Huskies shot just 18-54 from the field, 2-11 from three, and 4-12 from the free throw line in the loss.
