ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - The winter chill didn’t stop eager nature lovers from taking to the trails for a New Year’s hike at Severson Dells on Saturday morning.

More than a dozen people took a stroll in the snow, enjoying the sights and sounds the forest preserve has to offer, with experts leading the way to explain what they encounter.

Hoping to inspire people to take advantage of a new year and all its possibilities, those with the dells say it’s a great way to get started.

“I’m very excited when there’s snow, it’s when we see the wildlife moving around and we can see the tracks. And we had snow fleas today, which was awesome! But, because of the ice we have on top, it made it a little bit more of a challenge because it’s crusty and you’re crashing through and footing is not as sure,” said Ellen Rathbone.

Rathbone says the hike gives people the chance to identify various animal tracks and markings, giving them knowledge they can take when they go on any future outdoor adventures.
