Candlelight vigil honors mass shooting victims at Don Carter Lanes
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - A candlelight vigil was held Saturday night to honor and pray for all affected by the December 26th mass shooting at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford. 3 people were killed and 3 others were injured as a result of the shooting.
“The tragic events that occurred right here last week forever altered our life. We will never forget the people who are taken from us and our hearts are broken,” Alderperson Frank Beach said.
Grief, sadness, and pain weigh heavy on the minds of many in the Rockford region, as people begin to mourn the loss of loved ones the message from local leaders.
“Please know that as difficult as these times are for you and your families you are not alone, even though it may seem at times that you are alone, you are not alone,” Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said. “You have 147,000 Rockfordians standing right by your side.”
Family members of the three men who died in the shooting, Dennis Steinhoff, Jerome Woodfork, and Thomas Furseth, line the front of the vigil.
“When I thought about Jerome I looked up the word legend because he was a legend,” Dave Stone said. “The definition I found was an extremely famous or notorious person especially in a particular field, he was notorious.”
Owner of Don Carter Lanes Brad Sommers says the effects of the shooting are felt by many including his family and staff.
“I’d like to thank the staff that was on duty that night you guys were amazing,” Sommer said. “Some of you were able to usher people to safety, some of you were able to try and go get police assistance.”
As heads bow prayers are said, and the community rallies to support people who feel the impact of the shooting every single day.
“I want you to take these words with you, darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” Manager of Shooters Bar Jamey Funk said.
