DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) - Both the NIU men’s and women’s teams lost their season openers Wednesday in front of no fans inside the Convocation Center.

The Huskies men led UIC by 20 at halftime, but the Flames were ignited by their three point shooting and came from behind to win 65-61.

Trendon Hankerson and Tyler Cochran both scored a team-high 13 for NIU.

“Unfortunately, it was a tale of two halves,” said head coach Mark Montgomery. “I thought we played our best basketball in the first half. Unfortunately, it’s a 40 minute game. We took our foot off the petal, UIC made some plays, we had some breakdowns and we just didn’t flow as well in the second half, but it’s going to be a long season. You can see what this team definitely can do. We were all on the same page in that first 20 minutes and we’re going to build on that and go from there.”

The NIU women fell behind 13-0 and were never able to recover as they lost to IUPUI 85-61.

Sophomore Chelby Koker led the Huskies with 21 points.
