After opening in near silence almost a week ago - the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2008 show finished on a high, as top Indian designer Rohit Bal unveiled his "Siyaahi' collection - sending a dazzling array of neutrals and sparkling blues down the runway.
Inspired by the ancient city of Constantinople - an ancient melting pot of cultures and relations - the collection spanned both Eastern and Western cultures, with colors reflecting the marriage of the two.
Bal's collection started in neutral ivory, ecru and sand and transformed into emerald greens and bright sparkling reminiscent of Morocco's Majorelle Blue.
Neutral shades clung largely to ballet inspired tutu's, long flowing gowns and embroidered and jeweled capes, while bright blues and greens dominated long overcoats generously adorned with stones.
Darker shades of blue belonged to slinky full skirted ball gowns with intricate bodices constructed mainly from organza and chiffon panels.
The menswear consisted mainly of sleek well constructed classic sherwanis with long slits which made the contrasting lining visible.
The characteristic blues of the glazed tiles in the blue mosque of Istanbul were translated into a range of classic sherwanis which were richly embellished with arabesque motifs in all shades of turquoise, blue and silver.
One of the most popular elements appreciated in the Turkish culture, the blue glass symbol, was translated into giant motifs in sequin work and appliqu? work by Rohit Bal.
As promised by Bal earlier, there were no Bollywood stars on the ramp - the spotlight was firmly on the clothes.
But the designer did manage to persuade his fellow designers -Ritu Kumar, Rina Dhaka, Malini Ramani, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh, among others - to walk the catwalk for him in the Grand Finale.
Indian Fashion Week marked its 10th year this year. To celebrate, 10 new designers showed collections during the week long show.
