Snow has been falling since mid to late afternoon, mixed at times with rain and sleet in parts of the area. The precipitation becomes exclusively snow areawide by midnight, if not sooner, and will turn quite heavy shortly thereafter.
There've been several reports of thundersnow in and around Northern Illinois, and that trend could very well continue through the night, producing locally explosive snowfall rates of 1-2 inches PER HOUR!
As of 10:00pm, most areas had picked up 1-2 inches, with another 2-5 to follow before the snow tapers to flurries by mid-morning Friday. Travel will be hazardous during Friday morning's commute, so folks should plan accordingly!
