For the second consecutive day, and a whopping 6TH time in the month of January, temperatures eclipsed the 50° mark here in the Rockford area! Only one other time since 1906 had there been more than 6 50s in the year's opening month!

It's a far cry from last year, where at this time we were shivering while preparing for a historic blizzard! The year prior also was no cupcake, as temperatures were quite chilly as well! Here's a breakdown of our observed highs yesterday and today, along with the forecast highs for Wednesday and Thursday, then compared to the comparable time period of 2011 and 2010...

Jan 30 Jan 31 Feb 1 Feb 2

2012 52° 56° 45° 44°
2011 32° 25° 24° 23°
2010 25° 26° 29° 31°

A cold front has now passed through the area, which will reduce temperatures into the 40s for the next three days, levels still more than 10° above normal! There's a complex storm system in sight for the weekend, though there's very little in the way of agreement among our computer models at this early stage. For the moment, we're calling for a rain/snow mix possible for Saturday and Sunday, though there are a few solutions that suggest a couple inches of snow could accumulate, especially Saturday night. We'll keep an eye on developments in the days ahead!

Meantime, we officially welcome February on Wednesday! It's a month in which the normal highs and lows start to make a noticeable rise! The normal high and low on February 1st are 31°/14°, but by month's end find themselves at 40°/22°. Don't thing we're done entirely with snow just yet, though. A typical February does average 7.7" of snowfall for the month.
