CHICAGO (AP) -- Temperatures in Illinois are forecast to top 100 degrees by Thursday, and authorities are urging the public to be cautious.

The rest of the week is expected to bring temperatures in the lower and mid-90s.

Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications is urging city residents and visitors take steps to avoid heat-related illnesses, like staying hydrated and wearing light cotton clothing.

The city will open public cooling centers, including at all 79 Chicago Public Library locations. All but one of the city's public parks, pools and beaches are open.

Emergency officials are also asking people to be good neighbors and check on the elderly and disabled.

Officials in Champaign have canceled some summer school classes on Thursday and Friday in anticipation of soaring temperatures.
