ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Have you always wanted a new tree in your front yard? Well all you have to do is ask.
Rockford's Forestry Department began giving away and planting free trees Thursday morning. The city planted too many ash trees a few decades ago and with the emerald ash borer infestation, it is set to lose upwards of 5,000 trees over the next five years.
Rockford wants to avoid a similar incident in the future and is looking to diversify its tree population. So it is giving residents the choice of over 20 different species.
The Forestry Department is still taking requests but they will be added to the list for 2014.
