Parts of ravaged Vermont get flash floods; 2 rescued

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- More rain in parts of Vermont ravaged by Tropical Storm Irene has led to flash floods that stranded two workers repairing a damaged bridge.

Vermont Emergency Management says flooding Thursday evening in North Clarendon trapped the contractors on a sandbar on the Cold River. The two men were hoisted to safety by helicopter.

A flash flood warning had been issued Thursday afternoon for parts of Bennington, Rutland, Windham and Windsor counties.

The rain came just days after the weekend's tropical storm inundated Vermont and turned rivers into torrents and washed away roads, houses and bridges. Three people died in the state during the storm.

The National Weather Service had warned culverts, bridges and roadside ditches could become overwhelmed with water in parts of Rutland, which sustained extensive damage to roads leading into it during the tropical storm.
