Katia weakens to Category 2 hurricane

MIAMI (AP) -- Hurricane Katia has weakened over the Atlantic Ocean to a Category 2 storm.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Tuesday night that Katia's maximum sustained winds are at 105 mph (165 kph).

Forecast maps show Katia veering to the northeast away from the U.S. mainland in the coming week. But the hurricane center says large swells could affect the East Coast, Bermuda, the Greater Antilles and parts of the Bahamas over the next few days.

Katia is centered about 325 miles (520 kilometers) south-southwest of Bermuda and moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph).

Meanwhile, a new tropical depression formed over the Atlantic Ocean and was expected to become a tropical storm on Wednesday. It could pass over or near Puerto Rico by Sunday.
