BEECHER, IL (CBS NEWS) -- Spring and summer are when horses graze in pasture, filling up on healthy green grass. But this year, the pastures are brown and dry.
Owners are forced to dip into their hay supplies, which are usually in storage for the colder months. But with demand booming, supply is dwindling. Because of the drought, the hay crop came in at a fraction of the normal haul. As a result, prices are soaring and horse owners can't afford to feed their animals.
Hundreds are desperate for new homes and that is overwhelming The Hooved Animal Rescue & Protection Society in Barrington Hills. Owner Donna Ewing is panicked about how to save these animals and going through her hay supply at an alarming rate.
