OSCODA, Mich. (AP) -- Cargo shipping has resumed on the Great Lakes after the fringes of superstorm Sandy sent winds gusting to 74 miles per hour and spawned two-story-tall waves, forcing a two-day shutdown of traffic.

The Detroit Newsreports that at least four ships were under way in southern Lake Huron on Wednesday, where waves reached 16 feet one day earlier.

It says six freighters were headed out Wednesday on Lake Superior.

A buoy off Oscoda in northern Lake Huron recorded a 16-foot wave Tuesday, while a Canadian buoy measured a 23-foot wave. Waves reached 21.7 feet on Lake Michigan, 14 feet on western lake Erie, 12.1 feet on Lake Superior and 10.2 feet on Lake Ontario.

The lakes carry ships hauling bulk commodities such as iron ore, coal, limestone and grain.
