Freeze Warning: Protect Your Plants!

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- That freeze warning means many of our blossoming plants could be at risk. Today we went out to Anderson Gardens to get some tips on how to protect our spring greens.

Gardeners tell us it's going to be hard to guard everything, but for the most at risk plants we can use blankets or plastic to prevent them from the frost. The last freeze date for the Stateline isn't usually until around May 5th, so it's not uncommon to have a freeze. What is unusual is how far along most of our plants have blossomed.

Anderson Gardens Curator Tim Gruner said, "We are four to five weeks ahead of historical bloom periods, so this is really sort of an unprecedented weather period in our area in how it relates to the plants."

Normally if heartier plants go through a freeze it will kill off the current buds, but they will grow back. It may be tougher to survive the frigid temperatures from some plants because most trees and flowers are so ahead of schedule...
