Drivers Stuck in Flash Flooding

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Flooded roadways continue to be a big problem. Some Stateline drivers got stuck and that could be quite dangerous.

“I didn’t know how deep it was. If I would’ve seen it I definitely wouldn’t have gone through that way,” said Ken Roby.

Roby now has no choice but to let his car dry out. Water got into the engine after driving into the Schnucks parking lot on Charles, not realizing it is flooded.
“I mean that’s part of living in Illinois. I’ve lived here 60 something years, you see it every year, things flood.”

But driving through those flooded areas can cost you more than your car.

It only takes as little as 6 inches of standing water to lose control of the wheel. According to the CDC that’s why more than half of all flood related drownings happen when someone tries to drive through dangerous flood water.

“I wouldn’t drive through it. It’s an adventure, you never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes it’s shallow and it looks shallow, other times it ends up being really deep.”

City workers are now patrolling flooded areas like Charles Stret and high waters aren’t the only danger for local drivers. This heavy rain has pushed several manhole covers into the streets. City workers were able to recover one on Broadway and they hope these high waters recede soon, so they can fix any others and avoid accidents.
The city is asking for our help. If you see any loose manhole covers in the street, you’re asked to call the Public Works Department. Local fire departments are monitoring the Rock River. It’s expected to hit “moderate” flood stage this weekend.
