Deep Freeze Affecting the Rock River Valley Blood Center Supply

Inclement weather is affecting the community blood supply. Cancelled and postponed mobile blood drives and little traffic at donor centers means the Rock River Valley Blood Center is in great need of blood donors this week. “We must try and collect what products we can each day. We have to at least collect the platelet products that are so imperative to cancer and trauma centers. But the continued cold temperatures are making that extremely challenging. At this time there is a 2 day or less supply of A neg, A pos, B neg and O neg blood. With back to back below zero days, we could come very close to running out of any of those blood types,” said Jennifer Bowman, RRVBC.

Donating blood is safe and simple. You are most likely able to donate if you are at least 17 years old (16 year olds may donate with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health. Persons taking medications are not necessarily disqualified.

There are four community donor centers throughout the area (Belvidere, Freeport, Rockford) as well as many mobile blood drives. Log on to for hours, directions and mobile blood drive schedules.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center serves as a centralized, community blood center and is the sole provider of blood products and services to Beloit Memorial Hospital, Edgerton Hospital and Health Services, FHN, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Rochelle Community Hospital, Rockford Health System, SwedishAmerican Health System and SwedishAmerican Medical Center—Belvidere.
