Hurricane Humberto Threatens Texas

MIAMI (AP) -- The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Humberto is now a Category One hurricane with maximum wind speeds of nearly 80 miles-per-hour.

Humberto was producing heavy rain and winds as it edged toward the Texas Gulf Coast off Galveston..Forecasters are warning people to brace for the storm all along a 220-mile stretch of the coast into southwestern Lousiana.

Texas is coming off one of the wettest summers in more than 50 years and more flooding is possible from Humberto. Some areas could see as much as 15 inches of rain.

Texas Governor Rick Perry has activated 50 military vehicles and 200 soldiers, plus a-half dozen helicopters and two swift-water rescue teams. Other crews from the U.S. Coast Guard are on standby.

Last month, at least six deaths were blamed on Tropical Storm Erin, which dropped nearly a foot of rain on parts of San Antonio, Houston and the Texas Hill Country.
