ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Scientists say one of Alaska's most active volcanoes may be about to erupt. If it does, air travel in the region could be affected, but it's not expected to threaten any towns.

Satellite images are showing strong thermal readings at the nearly 8,300-foot Pavlof Volcano. They're consistent with what the Alaska Volcano Observatory says is a "vigorous eruption of lava."

Seismic activity is high at the volcano, with a tremor being recorded every minute. Mudslides caused when lava melts snow on the peak may also have triggered some seismic activity.

Pavlof is almost 600 miles southwest of Anchorage. It's about nine miles from a popular fishing ground but several small towns are too far away to be affected by lava, though they could see some ash if the volcano blows.
