NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A heat wave blamed in nearly a dozen deaths continues to bake wide parts of the South.

Five of the deaths have come in Tennessee over the past six days, including a 75-year-old man found dead in a house with no air conditioning and a 77-year-old woman who apparently had been out back gardening.

Forecasters say Memphis can expect it to be 100 or hotter through Friday.

Temperatures were in the triple digits Tuesday in a-half dozen states from Kansas to Mississippi.

Various heat advisories are in effect.

Heat buckled busy highways in Mississippi. Some Head Start classes for preschoolers have been canceled until Monday. And the heat is adding to problems for people living in homes damaged nearly two years ago by Hurricane Katrina.
