State Swelters As Temperatures Soar Above 90 Degrees

UNDATED (AP) -- Residents probably don't need the National Weather Service for this one -- it's hot outside.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s across the state as the week goes on. And heat index values are expected to be even higher, making it feel like it's about 100 degrees in some places.

Central and southeastern parts of Illinois will be particularly hard-hit, with actual temperatures around 100 degrees by Wednesday.

The weather service is cautioning residents to be careful and warning that the effects of heat can be cumulative over several days -- especially without air conditioning.

Some tips for staying cool: drink plenty of water, even if you aren't thirsty; avoid salty foods and strenuous activity and always use sunscreen.
