(AP) -- The situation is improving in South Dakota's Black Hills, where a wildfire blew out of a canyon and killed a homeowner and injured two firefighters.
It rained overnight, and the winds have died down.
Residents were evacuated but a homeowner who returned to retrieve possessions was killed. Twenty-seven homes were destroyed.
And a massive wildfire burning in Utah is now blamed for the deaths of a California couple. Driving in smoky conditions on Interstate 15, the couple either slowed down or pulled their motorcycle to the side of the road and were hit from behind, sending threw them into oncoming traffic, where they were hit by a truck.
In Southern California, two pilots were injured when a water-dropping helicopter crashed. They were battling a 6500 acre fire in the Los Padres National Forest.
