A new Tropical Storm has formed in the Caribbean, and could threaten popular tourist destinations Cancun and Cozumel in the coming days, before emerging into the Gulf of Mexico for a possible run-in with the United States.

As of Wednesday evening, hurricane watches were in effect for the eastern coast of Nicaragua, where landfall is expected Thursday, potentially as a minimal hurricane.

From there, the storm will travel over Honduras, and weaken in the process. After a potential glancing blow to Guatemala or Belize, the storm may target Cancun and Cozumel, along with the popular Riviera Maya Sunday or Monday. Heavy rains there would be the primary threat.

By late Monday or Tuesday, the storm is expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico. What happens from that point forward is anybody's guess. Computer models suggest this storm could affect areas between Texas and Florida. It's a system worth monitoring in coming days.
