The mayor of Los Angeles is promising help to the owners of the 500 homes that were destroyed by a wildfire in a mobile home park yesterday.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today toured the mobile home park. The mayor said he's never seen devastation like it. Many of the residents were elderly. No fatalities are reported, but police are searching the burned-out homes today.
Wildfires have burned more than 34 square miles since Thursday in the Los Angeles area and elsewhere in Southern California.
The fierce Santa Ana winds have eased today, allowing firefighters to set backfires in hopes of stopping the advance of the main fires.
But some expensive homes in Diamond Bar in Los Angeles County are being threatened today by flames advancing to the north
