Meteorologist James Auten works at the weather service office in Lincoln. He says that rainfall on Tuesday hit just more than 51 inches for the year. Auten says that beats the 1927 record of 50.8 inches.
Records have been kept since 1905.
Auten attributes the wet year to early summer flooding and hurricanes Gustav and Ike that struck the Gulf Coast and then sent precipitation into the central Illinois area.
The meteorologist says forecasts don't show that the rest of the year will be wetter than normal.
