Eight local governments in the Fox Valley are being asked to contribute $230,000 more for their legal defense related to the cleanup of PCBs in the Fox River.
The Fox River Cleanup Joint Defense Group includes Neenah, Menasha, Appleton, De Pere and Wrightstown along with three sewage districts.
The group has already spent about $570,000 on legal services in the past decade.
The Environmental Protection Agency and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are holding seven paper companies responsible for the $500 million river cleanup. Two of those companies have sued the municipalities and others to make them pay part of the cost.
Environmental law allows municipalities to be held responsible because they discharged PCBs into the river while treating the companies' wastewater.
