2nd Day of Changes for Rockford Parks Programs Due to Heat

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford Park District instituted the several program changes due to the current near-record heat.

Program or Event Changes for Thursday, June 28, 2012:
• Aldeen Golf Club
Senior Golf Lesson at 3 p.m. – Cancelled
• Lockwood Park
No Riding Lessons Tonight

Program or Event Changes for Friday, June 29, 2012:
• Time 2 Play Summer Playground
Keye-Mallquist - Close at 1 p.m.

Rockford Park District Provides Cooling Center:
Carlson Ice Arena, 4150 N. Perryville Road, Loves Park is one of the coolest places in town, thanks to the indoor skating rink. The public is welcome to come to Carlson Ice Arena to escape the heat.

Today: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Friday: 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

What We Are Doing
The Rockford Park District has implemented all Hot Weather Procedures making sure that anyone involved in any outdoor programs or activities, including staff, are taking mandatory water breaks every 15 – 20 minutes. Camp and playground programs have planned more water activities, and are taking frequent rest breaks. When possible, extra indoor activities have been planned. There are extra water stations and cooling stations for the public and staff at facilities, programs, and events.

Cool Ideas to Beat the Heat
The Rockford Park District has many ways to help you beat the heat. Below are some suggestions:

Spray Pads
Beattie Playground, Black Hawk Park, Brown Park, Churchill Park, S. Henrietta Park, Harmon Park, Keye-Mallquist Park, Liberty Park, Washington Park, and Mandeville Park will be on for an extended time today, noon – 8:00 p.m. and noon – 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012 through Sunday, July 1, 2012. If citizens would like a spray pad to be activated, they should call 815-987-8800 (between Memorial Day and Labor Day) when the heat index is at least 85 degrees.

Swimming
Alpine Pool, Harkins Aquatic Center, and Sand Park Pool are open! Alpine Pool, 4310 Newburg Road, Rockford, and Sand Park Pool, 1041 E. Riverside Blvd, Loves Park are open for paid public swimming on weekdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Harkins Aquatic Center, 910 Acorn Street, Rockford, is free and open for public swimming weekdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Magic Waters Waterpark is open today until 6 p.m., and admission is just $12. Friday, the waterpark is open 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission from 4 to 9 p.m. is only $12.99

Standfield Beach at Levings Lake, 1420 S. Pierpont Ave, Rockford, is open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and admission is just $2.

Indoor Playground
Sapora Playworld, inside Carlson Ice Arena, is open today until 8 p.m., and admission is half-price. Sapora Playworld is open Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Ice Skating
Carlson Ice Arena has public skating on Friday, June 29, 2012 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Adult open hockey from 6:00 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. On Saturday, June 30, 2012, watch the Rockford Open Figure Skating Competition for free from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Boat Ride
Grab ‘N Go Lunch Cruise on the Forest City Queen takes place every Friday through September 28, 2012. (No Grab ‘N Go available on August 31) Grab a boxed lunch on the dock, and board the Forest City Queen for a relaxing 30-minute cruise. Lunch includes your choice of hot dog, hamburger, cheeseburger, or chicken hot off the grill, plus chips, cookie, and soda or water. No reservations are needed; walk-ups are welcome.

Grab ‘N Go Lunch Cruise Times:
11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 1:00 p.m.

Grab ‘N Go Prices:
Adults: $8.00 ($8.50 non-resident)
Ages 5 – 17: $7.50 ($8.00 non-resident)
Ages 4 and under: $5.00

The Forest City Queen has a variety of specialty cruise options, including: Wednesday Family Fun Night, Friday Night Fish Fry Cruises, and Saturday Evening Sunset Dinner Cruises. Reservations are required at least three days prior to cruise dates. The Forest City Queen’s specialty cruises, as well as weekday and weekend cruises, include a 45-minute river cruise that provides passengers with interesting information about Rockford’s history, with a glimpse of some of the most stately homes located along the Rock River.

• Youth (ages 5-17): $3.50 ($4.00 non-resident)
• Adults (age 18+): $4.50 ($5.00 non-resident)
• Groups (per individual)*: $3.00 ($3.50 non-resident)
