Two weeks after a record rainfall soaked the state, a 20-mile stretch of the Illinois River continues to rise and could remain closed to recreational boaters through the weekend. Coast Guard officials in St. Louis say the river level at Beardstown in Cass County has increased to 23 feet. That's up about a foot from Friday's reading of 22 feet. The river closure runs north from Beardstown to Schuyler County.
Coast Guard officials say the river level creates current and debris hazards to smaller craft. They say it's unlikely the river will recede to acceptable levels before Monday. The entire Illinois River remains open to commercial craft.
