Ike Causes More Problems

Texas got socked the hardest, but Ike's effects are being felt far north of the Gulf Coast. The death toll from the storm is up to at least 21 people in nine states. Door-to-door searches continue in coastal Louisiana and Texas, where five people died in Galveston. Elsewhere, two golfers are dead after being struck by a tree in Nashville, Tennessee. In Indiana, a father and son were killed helping children escape from a ditch. Two people were killed in Illinois including an elderly man who was found in a flooded back yard. More rain fell in Chicago on top of yesterday's 6.6 inches. Work crews placed 30,000 sandbags along the Chicago River, which was 2 feet above its normal level today. Forty people in suburban Albany Park had to be evacuated by boat. Two million people are without power in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
